Seethe, Soak, Steam, Stew, Steep, Brew, Boil, Distill, Ferment, Mull or maybe just plain old Concoct. Who really knows. Katherine's stuffed this contraption full of cherries, plumbs, grapes. Some of the juice can be a little sour but it's all good. Well, and good luck in that we haven't crack a cold jar poring in the hot liquid. Yet. A nice treat in the middle of winter.

Aren't these just about the choicest looking Tomatoes you've ever seen. Taste pretty good too. The tomatoes are Kevin's and the bread is Casandra's. Both form the Saturday market. What an absolutely crazy time of year. Such an abundance of everything. Well, and the weather has held for us. A guy is able to look after so many of the fall projects. We are so lucky to be living here in Creston. Stop in and check out our newest fruit stand here in Creston. It's across from the Erickson school. In just a few years Barb and Frank have done the most incredible job of turning raw land into a productive market. The fact is they're seasoned hands and does it ever show. Great corn, loads of melons, peppers, garlic, apples and a mountain of pumpkins. Oh, and the best deal on their lovely little bouquet of flowers for just $2.00. A deal at twice the price. "To reclaim this much control over one's food, to take back from industry and science, is no small thing; indeed, in our time cooking from scratch and growing any of your own food qualify as a subversive acts." I'm lucky to be living with one of these subversive types but the Kootenay's is full of them. Loads of good food. Oh, the quote is from Michael Pollan's book In Defense of Food. That's quite good as well. Tim's Fish and Chips was new to Creston this spring. Oh, it is so good to see a fun-funky-interesting-independent restaurant open up. We have a good number of independents but of late we've also been hit with the foul little franchise places. "Rickies" Can you believe it. But enuff. Tim's is doing great. He has a little patio in the shade and get this, he also sells icecream. He's really worked hard this last summer. Stop in for a bowl of chowder. Is there anything that makes a guy feel more secure than a full woodpile? Check out this free load of mill ends from the fellas at Ja-Co Industries. Sure they're small pieces so the labour is us up for loading and unloading etc. but the little mill is only a few km. away and we have a small stove so it all works. Free. Give them a call at 428-9788. Katherine was thrilled to be back up in the bush picking Huckleberries. I myself find it a little slow going after Betties blueberries but I'm good for a small pale. Pretty much the end for down low here so expect our next excursion will be up the Salmo / Creston pass. That's as much as I'm willing to let on. Your on your own now. I think I'd better start paying a little more attention as to what's going on in the kitchen. I mean a guy helps clean up the odd bottle that rockets off but beyond that. Well, it's all a bit of a mystery. I think Lassi's are all part of this fermentation business. Oh good, I could learn how to make those at home and weigh in at 400 lb.s in no time. Maybe best to leave well enough alone. I say "Look Out" because it's all going to get a little crazy. This picture is of our fresh rasberries for the fruit salad I made this evening. It all starts with the asparagus then the strawberries, now the raspberries, saskatoon, blueberries, cherries, apricots, peaches, plums and on into all the variety of apples. Well, and I've left just a ton of things out. Now is the time to come to the Farmers Market Saturday morning. From here on in it just gets better and better. |
