Wow. Lucky Us. "Supercharge Your Savings" What a joke. Our feds, aka The U.S. Treasury have done us no favors with these low interest rates. Oh, but it's good for buying a house. Not. The prices have simply gone up. The banks still get their pound of flesh. The best part is our goverment telling us we're all a little stretched. First off everything costs more so of course we owe more now than ever before. Secondly why in the world would we bother saving.

This is a photo our friend Ed took of the Damn on Goat River. It's only about a mile walk from our home in Erickson. Spectular all covered in ice & icicles from the spray. What's even more interesting is that Tammy at the museum has written a book about it. "Electrified! The Stories of Electrical Power in the Creston Valley". She's author'd three other books as well. One on the grain elevators, a history book of the Creston area as well as a general histroy of the valley as told from old news paper articals. All four are available at the museum gift shop. Some great reads thanks to Tammy Hardwick who heads up the local museuem. The Great Gatsby. I may regret saying this but I wasn't that impressed. Broken hearts, jealous lovers, drinking, a car wreck. Maybe I'm not able to distiguish between good writing and a story that strikes me as a little juvinile. There are just so many excellent contemporary authors. I mean how is it a classic becomes a classic? Does it somehow create a life of it's own after ending up on a high school reading list. Am I a philistine, totally missing a great read? Help me out. What's your opinion? " Life Below Stairs as it Really Was " Oh my Lord, what an incredible read. I finished this book with both a laugh and a tear. What a story teller. Not to dwell on the odd and grotesque but I learnt what is was like to have to prepare the grouse after they had been hanging for two weeks. That and so many fascinating little bits of everyday life. About everything, cooking, being in service, people, horses. Don't tell Katherine but this will be in her Christmas stocking. What a treat. Our municipal election results are in. The voters did us proud. Missing from this early photograph are Jen Comer and Joe Snopek. I think we've got a real promising crew of seven lined up here for the next four years. A good group of people who are all bringing some real experience to the table with them. If ever there was a chance for little old Creston to shine this will be it. I so enjoy oral history. Studs Turkell, Barry Broadfoot, and this, The Story of Jazz. I mean the Story of Jazz by the people who lived it. Who else to tell it but the people who made it happen. Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Fletcher Henderson, Bunk Johnson, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Clarence Williams, Jo Jones, Jelly Roll Morton, Mezz Mezzrow, Billy Holiday. Lots more to, such great names and such great stories. To read Mezz Mezzrow's account of how Bessie Smith died. It makes you cry. This book will make you cry and laugh and just wish you coulda been in Chicago after the great war to witness it all. Do I judge a book by it's cover? You bet I do. Just look at " The Coroner's Lunch " by Colin Cotterill. The colours are warm and inviting. The photograph of the street sweeper is exotic and mysterous. The scalpel in the left hand top corner. This is going to take me somewere interesting and I want to read it. Will it be as good as I'd hoped? At half the cover price, $8, or $4 if I use my credits, it's worth a go. " The Spiderwick Chronicles " What a great story. I really do enjoy so many of the young adult tittles. A different world. One of faeries, goblins, dwarfs and many other odd charters. The Grace children discover them all. Well and I just love the little book. A beautiful cover, uncut pages and the perfect size to fit into your hand. More and more I'm begninning to apprectiate a book for how it feels in your hands. It's like I want to carrry this one around with me all day. |
